Antioxidants to Enhance Vision Health This AmericonPlus eye multivitamin contains 4 antioxidants: lutein zeaxanthin vitamin E and vitamin C. These antioxidants act to neutralize free radicals that could cause cell damage in the eye. For example a 2008 report based on 35 000 participants in the Women’s Health Study showed that high intakes of lutein zeaxanthin and vitamin E from an eye supplement correlated with a healthy lens structure and healthy lens function.* Vitamin C is normally found at very high concentrations in the lens and aqueous humor of the eye. An earlier analysis from the Women’s Health Study in 2002 showed that higher intakes of vitamin C from an eye supplement were related to healthy lens structure and function.* Many people don’t get enough of these antioxidants through their diet and so to help maintain vision health the American Optometric Association recommends an eye supplement of 10 mg/day of lutein 2 mg/day of zeaxanthin and at least 250 mg/day of vitamin C and 100 IU of vitamin E.
